Australian researchers announce a way to test anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) in order to see how many eggs a woman has left and calculate her chance of pregnancy. The test can be unofficially called an “egg timer” blood test. It can accurately predict ovum levels according to the concentration of a fertility hormone. It can help predict pregnancy chance. This is another big step forward in fertility science.
This test will help identifying the younger women who can be at risk of not having children easily when they get older. Then, they can try to get pregnant while they still have greater chance. It will also tell women who are going to have premature menopause. Then it allows them to plan for their family early in their lives.
Another group of women who will benefit from it are the ones who had undergone treatment for cancer or endometriosis or had ovarian surgery. The good news is that the test will cost just US $ 56.
The test can save couples tens of thousands of dollars. That will be their expensive cost if they want to undergo futile in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatments.
Normally, women are born with an average of one to two million eggs in their ovaries. The eggs will be shed monthly until menopause. A 20-year old woman typically has 200,000 eggs.
The number will be at half as she enters her 30s and dwindles to as low as 2,000 after the age of 40.
