fat_pregnancyDo you know that pregnant women who are obese are more likely to give birth to children with birth defects? That sounds scary, doesn’t that? According to the study published in Journal of American Medical Association, fat pregnant ladies can harm their babies. Read on and you will understand why.

There are some researches which show that obesity can reduce the chance of conception in women. They also say that the children from fat mother have increased risk of wide range of problems. In this particular study published in the journal, they found that obesity of the pregnant women affects the risk of having birth defects in children.

The researches show that a fat mother has more than twice the risk of having the baby with a neural tube defect for example spinal bifida than a mother who has body mass index of less than 25. The mother also has higher risk of giving the birth to kid with cleft lips or heart defects.

You can measure your body mass index by calculating from your weight and height. The BMI is the number from dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of his height in meters. You will be considered obese if your body mass index is more than 30. Having the body mass index of higher than 25 is considered overweight.

The studies have shown how the obesity of the mother affects the development of the baby. They think that obesity may cause the lack of some key nutrients such as folic acid in the baby and lead to neural tube defects. Therefore, it is recommended that a pregnant woman should take folic acid supplement during their pregnancy especially for the first trimester.

Another possible cause might be undiagnosed diabetes, another known risk factor for such defects.

According to the lead researcher of this study, Judith Rankin, the study showed that we found more birth defects in babies because we saw an increase in the number of the mothers who are overweight or obese. They also know that losing weight during their pregnancy may not be possible and healthy. Therefore, this is the time for the mother to eat more sensibly and more healthily.

For the sake of the health of your unborn child, you may want to consider changing your eating habit right now. You may want to do some reasonable exercise. That is a good idea. It is not for just this period. But it is for the future to come.
